About us

Our Gallery Maintenance team plays a crucial role in ensuring the seamless operation of the Science and Industry Museum. We are now recruiting for a Gallery Technician (Working Objects) to join the team based at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester on a full-time, fixed-term contract until March 2026.

About the role

As Gallery Technician (Working Objects), you will work with colleagues in the Gallery Maintenance Team and specialist external contractors to assess the condition of our working collections and carry out any required enabling works and essential maintenance to prepare the working collection for operation, maintaining high standards of care, operation, and safety.

You will ensure that museum policies and procedures are consistently followed, and you will support the development of new and existing galleries and exhibitions by providing technical expertise and supervision.

You will work closely with colleagues to operate working machinery to maximise uptime, performance and safety. In addition to supporting the learning team with working machinery operation during the delivery of live demonstrations as part of the public programme.

About you

Joining us you will have experience as a time-served apprentice in a relevant field or have equivalent experience (or qualification) in a relevant mechanical engineering role. You will have experience of accurately measuring industrial machinery parts and a good knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations, including PUWER.

Crucially, you will be a good communicator with the ability to confidently work with colleagues at all levels, external stakeholders and subject specialists and the public. You will have good attention to detail and the motivation to uphold the high standards of presentation, performance and health and safety practice.
