Head of HR

The British Museum is the custodian of an unparalleled collection telling the story of humanity over two million years; a world-leading centre of academic excellence; and one of the UK’s most popular visitor attractions.

Our success depends on the commitment and hard work of our thousand-strong staff. We are looking to recruit a Head of HR to lead the delivery of our recently launched HR strategy which recognises and seeks to build on that exceptional contribution of our people.

In this senior role, you will lead and inspire the HR team to ensure delivery of a first-rate HR service to the Museum, ensuring a high degree of consistency, efficiency and effectiveness. You will develop positive, constructive relations with managers and employees. You will also be a trusted advisor to the senior management team, combining a deep understanding of legislation and best practice, sound analytical skills and proven ability to be adaptable and pragmatic in ensuring solutions to challenges and in developing and delivering new initiatives.

With experience at a senior level across the full range of HR practice, you will also have a track record of effective delivery in an organisation of comparable size and complexity. Strong communication skills, a collaborative approach and excellent judgement will be essential for success in this pivotal role for the Museum.

The Museum offers a competitive benefits package including:

Generous annual leave allowance of 25 days (rising to 30 days after 10 years’ service) plus 2.5 privilege days and plus bank holidays
Membership of the civil service defined benefit pension scheme (find out here what benefits a civil service pension provides).
Free entry to a wide range of museums and exhibitions
Participation in private and public Museum activities, including talks by leading curators from around the world and behind-the-scenes opportunities to learn how museums care for and manage their extraordinary collections
Interest-free travel, bicycle and rental deposit loans
Professional and personal development opportunities
Employee Assistance Programme
Discounts on food and gift shop purchases
