Head of Programme Office

Are you searching to be the catalyst to delivering impactful and strategic major projects? Do feel fulfilled from being a real influence to the mission, sustainability, and growth of an organisation?

About us and the Team
The Science Museum Group (SMG) is the largest and most complex museum estate in the country. It houses a scientific collection of international significance. The Science Museum is the most visited museum by school groups in the country - and the group offers an inspiring and impactful STEM experience to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Across the Group, the Masterplan department leads the development of the long-term vision for each of the Group's sites. The department delivers built environment projects which collectively work towards that vision. These are diverse in nature and include new permanent galleries, commercial experiences as well as collections stores, infrastructure, fabric, public realm, and facilities projects.

The size and range of SMG's capital portfolio has increased hugely in the past two years, with over £160m of capital work in train across all the organisation's sites or in the pipeline. The organisation's ambition is significant, and we aim to deliver spaces of high design quality at pace, in an efficient and nimble way.

About the role
Several good practice programmes and project management processes are established within the department. However, these are not consistent across the portfolio. We are seeking an individual with expertise in the built environment to support the Masterplan Director with the oversight of delivery.

In this newly created senior leadership position, you will enhance and innovate existing processes and documentation to create clear guidance for the team and to lead on governance and assurance for the department. Collaborating closely with the SLT and other SMG senior stakeholders, you will foster connections to enable effective and efficient project work. Through your relationships and with your gathered intelligence, you will identify and manage organisational risks and issues that relate to the department.

We are keen to offer flexibility to a range of lifestyles and are open to considering this position on a part-time or full-time basis (minimum 21 hours per week). Also, you can be based from either one of our Manchester, London, or York Museums, however, there may be occasional travel to other SMG sites.

24 month contract
Salary: £60,000 - £70,000 per annum, pro rata

About you
You are highly collaborative and lead with a substance over style, practical approach to problem-solving and utilising your resources. You know how to work with key stakeholders to not only deliver effective outcomes but to ensure that relationships are strengthened from your connection.

Your experience of working within a PMO or managing a programme in the construction/built environment sector not only equips you with the knowledge to impart on behalf of the department, but to also evolve processes and relationships holistically whilst managing and mitigating risk.

Focusing on the essence and impact of your messages, you can tailor communications to both technical and lay colleagues at all levels. Adaptable, you can find effective ways to deliver impact with limited resources and in a changing context, whilst using skills in negotiation and conflict management.
