Senior Workshop Technician

The Horniman Museum and Gardens in south east London has been open since Victorian times, when the tea trader and philanthropist, Frederick John Horniman first opened his house and extraordinary collection of objects to the local community. Since then, our collection has grown significantly and includes internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as an acclaimed aquarium and natural history gallery – all surrounded by 16 acres of beautiful Gardens offering breathtaking views across London.

We are looking to recruit an experienced Senior Workshop Technician to join the friendly Exhibitions and Design section. The Senior Workshop Technician plays a key role in the team, leading our workshop and managing our Workshop Technician and Mountmaker and other contract roles.

You will have significant workshop experience in a museum, including expertise in using power and hand tools, ideally working with brass and wood, and to the highest health and safety standards. You will be a specialist museum mountmaker who will liaise with colleagues in Conservation, Curatorial, Collections Management regarding mounts and layouts, making recommendations of best approaches.

You will also use your expertise to support the Exhibition and Design Manager, working alongside external designers, on the overall layout of temporary exhibitions. You will review technical drawings and specifications for capital projects such as our exciting Nature+Love project, advising on technical aspects and maintenance requirements

Your role will be hands on, including leading on installation and dismantling of exhibitions, which will include object handling as well as constructing setworks. With a fine eye for detail and high standards in presentation, you will also undertake and lead the team on the maintenance of all gallery components, as well as interpretation in the Gardens.

A flexible, can-do attitude with experience of working with your own initiative, as well as within a team is essential.
