Whose Heritage 3.0 Curatorial Fellow

Royal Museums Greenwich is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum; Cutty Sark; the Royal Observatory; and the Queen’s House. Each of this site has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We form a campus within the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, with supporting operations at the Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre in Kidbrooke, the Brass Foundry in Woolwich and administrative offices in Greenwich. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and our strategy ‘Charting Our Course’ puts our people at the core of its success.

The Whose Heritage 3.0 Curatorial Fellow is a jointly funded role that arises from an ongoing partnership between Royal Museums Greenwich and Culture& which aims to build diversity in Royal Museums Greenwich’s curatorial practice and workforce. It forms part of Culture&’s programme as an Arts Council England Investment Principles Support Organisation. We want curatorial teams to represent all sections of the community and expect all fellows to have a strong commitment to work with Culture& and Royal Museums Greenwich in creating equal, diverse and inclusive cultural experiences.

We welcome and encourage Global Majority* applicants who will have access to the Culture& Wellbeing offer and a supportive network of diverse Whose Heritage 3.0 Curatorial Fellows. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop curatorial skills at Royal Museums Greenwich.

The Whose Heritage 3.0 Curatorial Fellowships take their inspiration from Stuart Hall’s essay ‘Whose Heritage?’ which will guide the activities of this role. Working alongside Royal Museums Greenwich’s art curators, they will be responsible for building access to and engagement with one of the most significant fine and decorative art collections in Britain. The Curatorial Fellow will use their specialist knowledge and public engagement skills to develop frameworks which will offer inclusive interpretations that highlight the historic collection’s relationship to contemporary issues, to build diverse audiences.

The successful candidate will have experience in undertaking independent research and a strong knowledge relating to a subject or thematic specialism of the fine art and decorative art collection at Royal Museums Greenwich (click here to explore our collection). They should be able to demonstrate experience in quickly being able to gain knowledge of new topics. A strong track record in making academic or theoretical ideas accessible to a general audience is vital for this role.

This is a part time, fixed term role in Band 5 - Middle Management and Professional Specialists. Core hours of work will be 32 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, occasional evening and weekend work is required.

We offer a culture encouraging inclusion and diversity, a generous pension scheme, 22 days annual leave plus bank holidays, 30% discount in our cafés and shops, interest-free season ticket and bike loans, training opportunities and continuous performance management reviews to support personal and career development, NMDC Reciprocal Agreement for free admissions to other museums and galleries’ paid exhibitions, and an environment with flexible working options.
