Assistant Archivist

About the role

Do you have a qualification and/or experience in archives management? Do you have a passion for research with excellent attention to detail? Do you enjoy delving into collections and making them accessible to the public? If so, we have a wonderful opportunity to join our team.

You will support the development and maintenance of the Paolozzi Archive and ensure that the collection is made accessible for research and display, with a specific focus on cataloguing. You’ll be liaising with the Paolozzi Project Conservator on collection care issues, and external stakeholders including The Paolozzi Foundation, the artist’s estate, academic and professional peers, collectors, funding bodies etc. You will help with the day to day running of the Reading Room and handling enquiries from the general public.

You will already have some research experience which can come from any background. However, you will be keen to develop your skills and knowledge around artists’ archives. You’ll be exceptionally well-organised, detail-oriented and have proven experience working in archive repositories. The ideal candidate will be confident in managing their own workload, working independently and a clear communicator.

You will also help us work towards our move to The Art Works. This exciting and transformative initiative will deliver a sustainable new facility in Granton to care for, research and share Scotland’s renowned art collection.


The difference you’ll make

Reporting to the Senior Archivist, Modern and Contemporary Art your responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

- Appraise, arrange and catalogue the Paolozzi Archive (and related collections) using CALM cataloguing database.
- Liaise with Paolozzi Project Conservator, undertaking re-boxing and basic conservation of material, as appropriate.
- Collaborate with other departments prepare the material for future digitisation and contribute to our learning programme and social media output.
- Develop content around the Paolozzi Archive for online publication.
- Conduct oral history interviews with key contacts.
- Help the Research Resources team to provide access to collections via the Reading Room.


Who we are looking for

To succeed in this role, you’ll need the following range of knowledge, skills, and experience:

- A postgraduate qualification in Archives & Records Management or equivalent experience.
- You will have a good honours degree (preferably an art history degree or similar).
- Proven experience of working in an archive repository.
- Good knowledge of 20th and 21st century art.
- Knowledge of collection care issues, including appropriate archive storage, handling and preservation.
- Understanding of relevant legislation (including Copyright, Data Protection and GDPR).
- Knowledge of content standards for archive description (i.e. ISAD(G)).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in using CALM or similar archive cataloguing database and other IT packages.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities.
- Able to demonstrate a commitment to supporting ambitious equality, diversity and inclusion priorities.


It would also be great if you have:

- A particular interest in artists’ archives.
- Experience of working with previously uncatalogued archive collections.
- Experience of conducting oral history interviews.
