Workshop Technician and Mountmaker

The Horniman Museum and Gardens in south east London has been open since Victorian times, when the tea trader and philanthropist, Frederick John Horniman first opened his house and extraordinary collection of objects to the local community. Since then, our collection has grown significantly and includes internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as an acclaimed aquarium and natural history gallery – all surrounded by 16 acres of beautiful Gardens offering breathtaking views across London.

We are looking to recruit a skilled Workshop Technician and Mountmaker to join the friendly Exhibitions and Design section. You will assist the Senior Workshop Technician in varied tasks, including designing and producing high quality museum object mounts and set work components, and installing, maintaining and dismantling displays and exhibitions.

You will have significant workshop experience in a museum, gallery or college, including expertise in using power and hand tools to work in metal, wood, and acrylic. Ideally you will be an experienced mountmaker (particularly with experience of making mounts from brass), but we are also open to candidates who have relevant related experience and a willingness to train in mountmaking. You will also have demonstrable understanding of Health and Safety in a workshop environment

You will have a fine eye for detail and high standards in presentation, as well as a positive and flexible approach to work, good team skills, as well as the ability to work on your own initiative as required.

The closing date for completed applications is 10am on 02 September 2024. Interviews will be held on 16 September 2024.

The Horniman is committed to equality of opportunity and welcomes applications from all sections of the community.
