RINA Surveying Officer

Rail Industry National Archives (RINA) Surveying Officer

Are you passionate about the preservation of archives? Are you willing conduct hands-on archival work and act as an advocate to safeguard the complex record of Britain's recent railway history?

About us

The Science Museum Group (SMG) archive and library collection contains around seven million items and is of outstanding national and international significance. SMG also oversees the Railway Heritage Designation Advisory Board (RHDAB) whose aim is to secure a sustainable future for railway records and objects.

We have received funding to recruit an officer to conduct a survey of records of the modern railway industry as held by current rail franchises across England, Wales and Scotland. The role would lead on a project to work with the RHDAB and the rail industry to identify and survey the records held by rail franchises and make recommendations for designation, as well as undertaking outreach work associated with the project.

This is a full-time (35 hours per week) role on a fixed-term contract for one year. Based at the National Railway Museum in York with hybrid working available.

About the role

As the Rail Industry National Archives (RINA) Surveying Officer you will advocate for the preservation of the records of the complex and changing privatised railway industry. You will work meticulously to survey records held in locations throughout Britian via remote and on-site surveying, widely promoting the outputs and ethos of the project.

You will conduct a physical survey of records held including providing advice, guidance and recommendations to companies in scope regarding designated records (their management, preservation, transfer to another body).

You will be communicating and advocating for the project to a wide range of stakeholders raising the profile of rail industry archives generally, highlighting key discoveries, attending conferences, and updating and reporting to RHDAB board meetings on progress throughout the project.
