Conservator

Do you have experience of undertaking remedial conservation of 3D objects? Do you want to carry out tasks relating to the treatment, storage and preventive conservation of a wide variety of objects from the Science Museum Group collection?

About us

The 545-acre Science and Innovation Park is the home of the Science Museum Group's National Collections Centre (NCC), our hub for collections management and access. A new collections management facility houses a vast range of objects in the collection from microscope slides to railway carriages, other objects are stored in repurposed aircraft hangars, sustainable hempcrete constructed buildings and other facilities dispersed across the park.

We are now recruiting for a Conservator to join the existing NCC Collections Consolidation Project Team based at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton, Swindon. This is a full-time role working 35 hours per week on a fixed-term contract until December 2025.

About the role

As Conservator you will undertake a variety of tasks related to treatment, storage, and preventive conservation of our collections. You will be part of a team working on a variety of objects. You will carry out the conservation activity required to safely move objects for transport across NCC and to other SMG sites, including stabilising fragile objects, management of collections hazards and packing complex objects.

You will prepare condition and treatment reports with annotated images and inputting this information into the database of our collections management system - MIMSY XG. In addition to advising colleagues on conservation issues connected with the collection to ensure that projects are completed on time and objects are cared for to professional standards.

Salary: £31,532 per annum

About you

Joining us you will have a relevant conservation qualification or equivalent practical experience and knowledge. You will have experience of undertaking remedial conservation of 3D objects.

Crucially, you will have knowledge and practical application of current UK Health and Safety practice. You will also have good team-working skills in addition to the ability to work independently. You will be able to complete time-sensitive projects, meeting set deadlines calmly and effectively.
