Data Protection / Sensitivity Review Support Officer

Location: St Pancras
Contract: Fixed Term
Hours: Full time (36 hours)
Grade: C
Salary: £28,119 per annum

About the role
To conduct Data Protection and Sensitivity (DP/S) Review assessments on files from the India Office Records relating to Gulf History for the British Library Qatar Foundation Partnership (BLQFP), which produces the open access Qatar Digital Library. This will include researching or liaising to research topics identified as being present in files requiring assessment, producing DP/S assessments for c. 80 files with a variety of identified concerns, and liaising with the Cataloguing Team and the Copyright and Compliance Team Lead to complete the assessment process. You will work with compliance leads, cataloguers, and other members of the project team to ensure that the sensitivity reviews and processes follow UK and international legislation and internal policy, and are recorded to a high standard for audit purposes. The aim of this post is to determine whether these in-scope materials could be safely uploaded to our open access digital platform and accessible to our users all across the globe.

The India Office Records comprise the archives of the East India Company (1600-1858), the Board of Control or Board of Commissioners for the Affairs of India (1784-1858), the India Office (1858-1947), the Burma Office (1937-1948), and a number of British agencies overseas which were officially linked with one or other of the four main bodies. The India Office Private Papers (also known as the European Manuscripts) are probably the world's largest collection outside Asia of personal archives relating to South Asia. The Middle East was of great strategic importance to both the East India Company and the India Office, resulting in a wealth of documentation about the region. The British Library Qatar Foundation Partnership Programme (www.bl.uk/qatar) is making available online records of the British Factories (trading posts) in the Gulf region, plus other relevant Marine records, Board papers, Military records, Proceedings papers and Political and Secret papers within the India Office Records. Private papers of important historical figures relevant to the Gulf will also be digitised and catalogued, alongside manuscripts in English, Arabic and other languages relating to travels and events in the Gulf and Arabia. The project ispartis part way through Phase 4. The digital images, metadata and all contextual information created by the project will be made freely accessible worldwide, without restriction, through the Qatar Digital Library, www.qdl.qa. Enhanced catalogue records are also being made available online in the British Library’s Catalogue of Archives and Manuscripts.
