Collections Project Officer

Collections Project Officer

Do you have knowledge of the procedures for documenting and handling museum collections? Would you like to be part of the team working on the re-location and refresh of a variety of objects at the Science Museum?

About us

We are assembling a team to deliver important collection moves at the Science Museum in London. These roles will be instrumental in delivering changes to the museum's permanent galleries, including the re-location and refresh of the museum's Space Technology displays, including objects like Tim Peake's spacecraft and items used on NASA's Apollo programme

We are recruiting for two Collections Project Officers to join on a fixed term contract for 6 months, working full-time, 35 hours per week. This position is based at the Science Museum in London.

About the role

As Collections Project Officer you will work to inventory, pack and palletise objects ready for their moves, whether to a new gallery or to the museum's collections stores in at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton, Swindon.

You will work systematically through collections on display to capture and record object information in SMG's collections management database (Mimsy XG), including examining and documenting the condition of each object and assigning each object a new label and barcode.

You will be handling a range of objects, providing condition grades and identifying collections requiring specialist conservation. You will utilise your good awareness of hazards in collections to identify hazardous objects and materials within the collection and work with conservators to ensure correct processes are followed and that objects are documented to the required standard.

About you

Joining us, you will have knowledge or awareness of the procedures for documenting museum collections and an awareness and understanding of Health and Safety issues in relation to museum objects and hazardous materials in museum collections. You will have knowledge of the procedures involved in safe packing, handling, and moving of museum objects.

Crucially, you will have good attention to detail and be able to maintain a high level of accuracy when completing tasks, e.g. when creating database records. You will be an effective communicator, with the ability to work well as part of a team to solve problems and meet deadlines in time-sensitive situations.

Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
