Do you have practical experience and knowledge of conservation and collections care practices? Would you like to carry out preventive and interventive conservation on a variety of Science Museum objects, including the Space Technology displays?

About us

The Conservation & Collections Care team (C&CC) support all conservation activity across the collection and are responsible for establishing and maintaining conservation and collection care standards.

We are recruiting for a Conservator (Masterplan Projects) to join on a fixed term contract for 6 months, working full-time, 35 hours per week. This position is based at the Science Museum in London, with hybrid working also available.

About the role

As Conservator (Masterplan Projects), you will conduct preventive and interventive conservation as part of a team assembled to deliver collections moves. Your work will include the re-location and refresh of the Science Museum's Space Technology displays. You will ensure appropriate methodologies are used, including condition checking and appropriate documentation.

You will undertake interventive object conservation where appropriate. On occasion, you will support directly with object movements and object protection. You will ensure that these tasks are carried out in a safe and secure manner to comply with current legislation and following best professional practice.

About you

Joining us, you will have practical experience and knowledge of conservation and collections care practices in addition to practical experience of condition reporting 3D objects and of undertaking 3D object remedial conservation treatment.

Crucially, you will be an effective communicator, able to work well as part of a team and complete work within set deadlines and in time-sensitive situations. You will have good knowledge of and practical application of UK Health & Safety Practice, including manual handling, collections hazard management, use of power tools, lifting and moving equipment, writing Risk and COSHH assessments.
