About us

This position is based at the Science and Innovation Park (SIP) in Wroughton, at the heart of the Park is the National Collections Centre (NCC), home to around 90% of the Science Museum Group (SMG) Collection. The Documentation Team works with collections from across SMG.

We are recruiting for a Senior Documentation Officer to join on a maternity cover, fixed-term contract for 9 months. This is a full-time role, working 35 hours per week and is based at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton, Swindon, with hybrid working also available.

About the role

As Senior Documentation Officer, you will manage a team of Documentation Officers at NCC and be a champion for cataloguing and documentation standards, ensuring that data is consistent and accurate. You will provide expert documentation support and troubleshooting for SMG colleagues in other teams.

You will provide documentation expertise to teams working on a large-scale inventory project (Consolidation project) and a collections data improvement project (Empowering Safety - Hazardous Materials Awareness). You will also coordinate and provide expert documentation advice in a variety of other areas including statutory audits, working groups, new acquisitions and collections management process development.

The work you and your team deliver will help to maintain accountability for the collection, including cataloguing objects, participating in collections audits and generating facility information for new exhibition spaces. You will contribute to the digitisation of the SMG collection by producing and editing data for our sector-leading Collections Online web portal, helping to reveal our collections to the world.

About you

Joining us you will have an in-depth understanding of museum documentation policies, procedures and cataloguing standards. You will be able to plan, manage and monitor documentation, inventory or cataloguing projects, ensuring they are delivered to a set timescale.

Crucially, you will have the leadership and communication skills required to motivate a team, with experience of collaborating effectively with a range of colleagues. You will be able to plan and manage a balanced workload for yourself and your team, using your initiative to solve problems effectively.
