Schools Casual Tutor

About Us
The Horniman is looking for two Schools Casual Tutors to join our award-winning Formal Learning team.

Awarded M+H Learning Programme of the Year 2024, our team delivers ambitious, high-quality programmes for c.40,000 learners each year, from EYFS to University level, including those in home or alternative education. Our workshop programme is engaging, learner-led, and constantly evolving, making the most of our exceptional Handling Collection and Gardens, and learning from the colleagues and communities we work with.

Through our programme, we encourage curiosity, and strive to engender appreciation, care and respect for the planet and its people. We work in partnership, and proactively pursue opportunities to listen to, represent and amplify the voices, views and needs of children and young people through consultation, coproduction and our learning offer.

About the Role
Our Schools Casual Tutors facilitate interactive, curriculum-linked, high-quality learning workshops for pupils, providing cover for our team during busier periods.

Our sessions span a wide range of subject areas and topics that reflect the Museum’s collections, Gardens and the National Curriculum, and utilise either our Handling Collection or outdoor learning spaces. Casual Tutors are typically trained to deliver a small number of our most popular workshops.

We are looking to recruit two Casual Tutors, including at least one tutor with experience delivering outdoor learning sessions- including pond dipping.

The successful candidates will have considerable experience working with EYFS and primary school children outside the classroom, share our passion for connecting learners to collections and the natural world, and share the Horniman’s values.

Main Responsibilities:
As a Schools Casual Tutor at the Horniman, you will:

• Deliver engaging, hands-on learning sessions for EYFS and primary school groups, using the Museum’s collections and outdoor spaces
• Support the set-up, changeover, and pack-down of learning sessions, with assistance from a Learning Assistant
• Help us to evaluate the effectiveness and quality of our schools programme
• Ensure a professional, safe, and positive learning environment, maintaining high standards of care and safeguarding
• Be flexible with work dates, stepping in to cover busy periods, and adapting to the dynamic needs of our educational team
