About the role:
Assistant Collection Managers in the Loans & Display team are responsible for all practical aspects of care and preservation of the world-renowned collection of the British Museum. As an Assistant Collection Manager: Loans and Display Framed Works, the post holder will work as part of a small team responsible for the framing, handling, packing and installation of 2D objects but will also contribute to other aspects of collection care across the museum. Working in relation to the British Museum’s exhibitions programme and loans to venues in the UK and internationally. Previous Framing experience is essential for this primarily technical role. Problem solving is a key aspect of the role, and a flexible approach to working is essential.
Key areas of responsibility:
• To observe best practice in all aspects of object handling and collection storage.
• To facilitate the movement, packing, and display of 2D works and objects across the collection.
• To use tools and workshop equipment in the delivery of framing, frame making, object packing and installation activity.
• To construct frames and frame artworks both permanently and temporarily for loan.
• To observe health and safety standards for activities and equipment.
• To carry out and complete condition reports for objects
About you:
• Good general education including GCSEs or equivalent
• Demonstrable interest in aspects of the Museum’s collections
• Manual dexterity
• Understanding and appreciation of materials and objects
• Practical experience of hand tools and workshop equipment (desirable)
• Framing experience (desirable)
